Challenges that Single Parents Face

  • Over 18,500,000 children in the U.S. lived with a mother or father. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020)
  • Half of all children in the U.S. live with a single parent (The Harvard Gazette, 2020)
  • Compared to children living in similar situations around the world, the U.S. children are 3 times as likely to reside in single-parent households (Pew Research, 2019)
  • Over 3,300,000 single mothers in the U.S. living below the federal poverty level have never married, 1,090,000 single mothers are divorced, 853,000 are separated, 333,000 have absent spouses, and 137,000 are widowed. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2019)
  • Families with children headed by unwed mothers have a poverty rate of 31%. families headed by unwed fathers have a poverty rate of 15%. (National Women's Law Center, 2020)
